Many years in the planning, the completed project represents a joint effort between area youth, civic leaders, and various community groups. The 6000 square foot Teen Center is located adjacent to the existing Senior Center in downtown Kirkland's Peter Kirk Park. The two centers will share facilities and offer intergenerational programs.

The Teen Center was designed with input from a youth advisory committee, and seeks to represent the dynamic, high energy, hip character of this group. The variety of spaces and functions was planned to appeal to the widest range of youth interests possible. Programmed spaces include a teen-run café, multi-purpose room with performance stage, TV lounge, technology center, art studio, dark room, recording studio, and administrative offices.

The building plan was designed to be as open as possible both for staff monitoring purposes and to give the relatively small facility a greater sense of space. Interior spaces include exposed wood roof structure and mechanical ductwork, modern lighting fixtures and brightly painted surfaces. A clerestory runs the length of the building and provides natural light throughout the day.
