Lewis Architects worked with Kirkland Parks and Community Services leadership to provide a much needed replacement for the existing grandstands in Kirkland's Everest Park. The effort will help keep the facility operating at the level and quality that is expected to continue hosting events such as the Little League World Series.
The Everest Park Grandstands include aluminum bench seating above and lockable storage areas below each structure. Built to last, the grandstands replace the existing ones and serve both spectator and park maintenance needs. The design is in keeping with the character of the existing concessions stand and shares some similar elements. Existing flagpoles were reused in the new design. Concrete walls are textured with formlined concrete, emulating the metal panels of the existing concession stand. Precast concrete units span from mid to end walls to form a stepped deck. Precast is used atop the columns and low walls. Steel plates border the top and sides of the deck, similar to the steel found in the existing concessions, and introduce color. Likewise, vinyl-topped bench caps add accent color and warmth to the aluminum bench seating. Arched cedar doors provide access to storage below the bleachers and interest along the approach to the central entrance. Concrete reliefs and reveals were cast into the end walls near the central entrance - a motif of a baseball in flight.
