The building is a 40,000 square foot new public library sited adjacent to Puyallup's downtown Pioneer Park. The street separating the park from the building was vacated and transformed into a pedestrian mall allowing the building to have a strong presence from across the park. Towers define the building's two entries, with the main entry at the base of a 65-foot clock tower. The library's traditional brick and detailing were chosen to compliment the adjacent downtown district. Combined with this is a single story multi-purpose space that takes on a more modern appearance with its colored precast concrete panels and hidden sloping roof. The parking side of the building also contains a second story, copper clad, triangular window bay that adds a modern touch.
Once inside, the building opens up to a 2-story central lobby space with a sky bridge connecting the upper floors of the library's collection. A free-flowing, copper clad wall acts as a backdrop to the space with a custom designed staircase and hung lighting fixture being a main focus. A large rotunda anchors one of the building corners allowing space for the custom designed children's area on the ground floor and a reading lounge on the second. Lewis Architecture + Interior Design was presented with an honorable mention award for public work in "The Best of 2003 Awards" by Northwest Construction Magazine on the Puyallup Public Library. |
