This 15,000 square foot library is inserted into a site ringed with ravines and wetlands. The exterior and interior design complements and takes advantage of the natural setting.
Because site requirements placed the building at a substantial distance from the street, a primary design goal was to create a strong visual presence from afar. High windows function as a light emitting "lantern" by night and flood the space with natural light by day.
The interior character, from the exposed timber roof framing to the woodlands-inspired carpet, reflects the natural setting. A slate faced fireplace anchors the adult reading lounge, while the children's area features a stylized lighthouse, representative of Mukilteo's official identifying symbol.
