The existing Coupeville Library building (originally designed by LEWIS in 1987) was more than doubled in size to 6000 square feet. Because of its proximity to Coupeville’s historic waterfront, the building has a traditional character. The library’s interior was completely updated to include “bookstore” style shelving and signage, expanded Children’s and Teen areas and a new community meeting room with an operable wall that allows it to become part of the general library space.
The community’s strong interest in environmental responsibility led to the inclusion of several design features, the most prominent being roof-mounted solar panels to generate electricity and two rain gardens to filter storm water.
