This addition & renovation for an existing well-loved library is the result of a remarkably successful fund-raising process, both for the building and for the art works that are incorporated within it. As a first step, LEWIS completed programming, preliminary design work and a project budget. Utilizing that information, the library board embarked on a fund raising effort. As donation totals approached the goal, design work was resumed and the project became a reality.
The distinctive form of the original library was a familiar community icon, and was therefore retained as an identifiable element within the expanded building. Improvements were made to lighting, energy efficiency and support for technology. The addition is designed to complement the existing building, but also creates an updated image for the overall facility.
Two floors are connected by a sculptural, light-filled stair enclosure. The lower level houses the Children's area, complete with program space and dedicated restrooms. Adult services and community meeting spaces are contained on the upper level.
Artwork was acquired by way of a separate fundraising process, and is incorporated into the facility in many forms. Several of the building components, including entry doors and wall tiles, are artist-produced.
